The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) (earlier CIEFL) is a central university based in India. It is a national university of higher education. Its main campus is located in Hyderabad. It also operates campuses at Lucknow and Shillong.

The EFLU provides for the study of English and foreign languages and their literatures, organisation of research, training of teachers, production of teaching materials, and extension services, to help improve the standards of the teaching of English and Foreign Languages in India. It is the only University in India catering exclusively to the teaching/learning Foreign Languages.

Over the years, EFLU has been introducing various foreign languages that are in demand. It currently offers academic programmes in English, Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.

The EFLU was also one among the first institutes in the country to start a cultural studies course with an M.A in that subject. The EFLU offers M.Phil and Ph.D. in this area which blurs the disciplinary lines between Sociology, Film Studies, Anthropology, History, Literature etc. In 2006, a decision was passed by the parliament of India to accord it Central University status. The University has been renamed as the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) on August 3, 2007 with Abhai Maurya of the Department of Slavic Studies, University of Delhi, as its first Vice-Chancellor.

Three campuses

The EFLU functions from three campuses across the country.

The Hyderabad campus is oldest and the main campus of the EFLU. Established by the Government of India in 1958 as the Central Institute of English, the scope of its activities was expanded in 1972 to include the teaching of major foreign languages such as French, German and Russian. Consequently the name changed to Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages before it was accorded central university status in 2006 and was renamed as the English and Foreign Languages University.

The Institute is situated on a 15-hectare site near Osmania University in Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, and has its Administrative block, Academic block, Library, Men's hostel, Women's hostel, Health Centre and Staff quarters, all on the campus. The academic programmes of the Institute have been organized into five Schools:

The campus offers courses leading to M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. in a number disciplines including Linguistics, ELT, Literature, Cultural Studies, European Studies and Language Studies.

In 1989, the Center introduced the Postgraduate Diploma in the Teaching of English. Besides, the faculty members have also been involved in extension services of various kinds.
