Sir Arcot Ramasamy Mudaliar University, popularly known as SRM University is a co-educational private university located in the state of Tamil Nadu,India.

The university has two campuses in Tamil Nadu at Kattankulatur, Kancheepuram district, Ramapuram and one in Modinagar, near Delhi. Previously functioning under Anna University, as SRM Engineering College, the institute gained deemed status in 2003-04, and was renamed SRMIST(SRM Institute of Science and Technology) and then eventually called SRM University.

History
The beginnings of the college can be traced back to 1968, when Valliammai Society started a primary school called Florence Nightingale School (now the SRM Nightingale School).

Later, Valliammai Polytechnic was set up. It was only in 1985 that SRM Engineering College was established. The SRM Group has investments in SRM Hospital, Geetha Constructions, Royal Southern Hotels, SRM Printers, SRM Benefit Fund Ltd., SRM Systems and Software, SRM Easwari Travels and Tours India(P) Ltd., Blossom Infotech.

The Campus Infrastructure

Biotech BlockThe campus is huge and the infrastructure is excellent and well maintained. The Indian Bank,The City Union Bank, The Royal Southern(a three-star hotel)which includes swimming pool and bar facilities, and the Royal Inn Restaurant are located in the campus grounds. The various blocks within SRMIST include, the PG Block, the Hi-Tech Block, the Main Block, the Mechanical Block, the Mech PG Block, the Electrical Sciences Block, the Computer Science Block, the Biotech block,IT Park,an auditorium,MBA block, MBA library along with a Library with an Internet Cafe as well. There is also the hospital, medical and dental colleges. There are also about half a dozen hostels, some of which are the K.R.S Hostel, the UG Hostel, the PG Hostel, Meenakshi Women's Hostel, International Hostel.

Admissions
Admission to SRM Engineering college is based on an entrance examination SRMEEE(SRM Engineering Entrance Examination) which is conducted in centers all over India and Bhutan. Short-listed students will be called for counseling and admission procedures will be carried out.

The university is approved by the University Grants Commission and is also accredited by the NAAC National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

It has been given a grade of B+(overall score) by NAAC.

Research and Development
Research and Development is of paramount importance at SRM University and it boasts of a state-of-the-art nano-technology laboratory. Students, right from undergraduates to PhDs, are encouraged to think independently and are inspired by the able and experienced faculty to author research papers in their chosen field of interest.

Examination System
Each academic year is divided into two semesters. Each semester has three internal exams and one final exam (semester exam) for all theory subjects. For laboratory courses there is usually one internal exam followed by the final exam.Most of the exams are theoretical and like most other engineering colleges in India.

The students are usually allowed to see the corrected internal examinations.However like many other Universities, students are not allowed to see their evaluated final exam answer sheets, in spite of the Right to Information Act giving students the right to see them.
